Artist Bio

Amber is co founder of The Boat Studio which is a multi disciplinary, adaptable space that is used as a meeting place and a platform for music, performance and visual art on board a 55ft narrowboat.

Amber has worked extensively within the arts for over a decade. She has worked as an artist assist to Sean Edwards helping to deliver his Wales in Venice presentation 2019. She has also worked as Creative Arts Practitioner which as taken her to Copenhagen, Athens and worked extensively with schools in her local area.

Residencies and Awards 

  • 2006 Residency in the basement at Llandaff Road for the show Experimentica

  • 2009 Shortlisted for the Hans Brinker Award in Amsterdam. 

  • 2013 Travel bursary award to travel to the Venice Biennale to conduct a research trip for The Boat Studio.

  • 2015 and 2016 Awarded Catalydd Creative small project grant towards The Boat Studio

  • 2018 Awarded project grant from Arts Council of Wales to run ‘Border Bound’ residencies on The Boat Studio

  • 2019 Residency at Shift Art Space, Cardiff

  • 2019 Chosen to be part of g39’s UNITe programme, g39 Cardiff

Work Experience 

 

The Boat Studio: https://theboatstudio.org

The Boat Studio is an artist led multi- disciplinary, adaptable studio space on a 57ft narrow boat run by Amber Mottram and Ellie Young. Below is a list of their achievements:

  • 2013 - Group Mentoring Scheme with g39 including obtaining Helmsmans certificates and linking up with affiliate groups namely Black Water Voyages, Ikon, Birmingham.

  • 2014 - Crowdfunding Campaign - raised £5k towards the project through selling merchandise.

  • 2015 - 'Overboard' – The Boat Studio Fundraiser at Chapter Arts Centre. Raised 3.2K through art auction and live bands.

  • 2016 - Worcester University Students Art Residencies. Test residencies with final year students on Droitwich Canal loop.

  • 2016 - Amy Franceschini and Future Farmers hosted on The Boat Studio from London to Bristol as part of Artes Mundi 7.

  • Winter Residencies: An eclectic mix of artist and musicians took part in mini residencies on Gloucester Sharpness Canal.

  • 2018 -  ‘Border Bound’  An Arts Council Awarded project that took an artist from Chester to Wales and back responding to the border crossing. Llangollen and Shropshire Union Canal.

 

Artist Assistant to Sean Edwards

  • Helped in the design layout of exhibition towards Spike Island ‘Maelfa’ show

  • Worked on the construction and installation of ‘Drawn in Cursive’ at Chapter Arts Centre.

  • Helped in the organisation of the Conference ‘A Starry Messenger’ as part of artist Bedwyr Williams Wales in Venice presentation.

  • Worked on the presentation of Sean Edwards, ‘Undo Things Done.’ Including the making of large scale sculpture for Wales in Venice 2019.

Creative Arts Practitioner - Head for Arts/ Tandem Europe

  • Helped to create a learning tool as part of Tandem Europes creative partnership scheme.

  • Worked in Copenhagen collaboratively with two other artists to trial prototype tool with Danish school children.

  • Presented finished prototype at Tandem Europes final meeting in Athens

  • Worked with seven schools in the Blaenau Gwent region as part of a Creative Collaborations project to encourage primary kids to create their own prototype learning tool based on their interests.

 

Criw Celf - Creative Arts Practitioner

  • Helping to create a tool kit to enable year 9 children to consider arts based careers when thinking about G.C.S.E choices.
